Ewry Residence
Ewry Residence, the Sea Ranch, CA
The first time I viewed the site you could barely make out the view south to Black Point Beach because of the thick hedgerow. The solution was to trim the lower branches and tuck the living area into the trees. The tree trunks created a fabulous framed view of the beach. On the road side of the property I was able to shield the entry area with an earthen mound. By sloping the garage roof the form carried itself back to the ground while shedding any northwest winds.
The other view, to the west, opens to the living area as well as both the first and second floor bedrooms. The solarium in the living area projects into the meadow creating a greater connection to the land than just another window.
Separating the garage from the house allowed us to create a private hot tub area and sitting deck. A barn door can be closed for privacy and wind protection.
